On Monday, Tripura police announced the successful rescue of a minor girl allegedly abducted from Dhalai district in December last year. The girl was located in Gujarat after extensive tracking efforts.
According to Subdivisional Police Officer Jayanta Karmakar, “We received a complaint regarding the elopement of a minor from Dhalai district. The father reported that a youth from North Tripura district had abducted his daughter.”
Karmakar further stated that police investigations revealed the accused individual and the minor girl were residing in Gujarat. A team, headed by woman sub-inspector Pampi Nath, traveled to Ahmedabad, where they apprehended the man and safely returned the girl with assistance from the Gujarat police.
The girl was reunited with her family, while the accused man was presented before a local court for legal proceedings.
In August last year, Chief Minister Manik Saha remarked that Tripura held a significant position among states with regards to child marriage prevalence.
In 2019, an international study revealed that Tripura ranked second in India for child marriages among girls aged 15-19, with a rate of 21.6%, surpassing the national average of 11.9%. Quoting data from the National Family Health Survey, the report highlighted that over 80% of these child marriages occurred in rural areas across three districts of the state.
