The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has maintained a vigilant stance against illicit activities during the Indian Premier League. In the ongoing IPL 2024 season, the ACU has ejected suspected bookies from two venues linked to the Rajasthan Royals, one in Mumbai and the other in Jaipur.
As per a BCCI official, the ACU apprehended two suspected bookies from a corporate box during Rajasthan Royals’ match against Delhi Capitals on March 28, handing them over to the local police. Subsequently, during the MI-RR game on April 1, two more suspects were handed over to the police from the MCA President’s Box at the Wankhede Stadium.
Although an FIR was filed against both individuals in Jaipur, the situation in Mumbai appeared to be a potential case of mistaken identity.
As reported by an officer from the Marine Drive Police Station, the two individuals were released since no incriminating evidence was found on their electronic devices.
Being physically present at a match provides an opportunity for bookies to exploit the brief delay between live action and its telecast or streaming, typically ranging from eight to fifteen seconds. The ACU responded promptly, leveraging CCTV and live TV footage.
Speaking anonymously, a BCCI official emphasized that the ACU, backed by the BCCI, is diligently working to eradicate corrupt elements from the IPL.
Notably, the MCA President’s Box, located directly above the Wankhede Stadium dressing rooms, is exclusively reserved for invitees, with all 200 tickets strictly allocated and not available for general sale.
