Cheteshwar Pujara has etched his name among the legends of Indian domestic cricket, achieving a significant milestone on Sunday by becoming the fourth batsman to surpass 20,000 runs in first-class cricket during Saurashtra’s Ranji Trophy match against Vidarbha.
In 260 matches, the 35-year-old stalwart has accumulated this impressive feat at an average of 51.96. Leading the list are Indian coach Rahul Dravid (23,794 runs at 55.33), followed by Sachin Tendulkar (25,396 runs at 57.84), and Sunil Gavaskar (25,834 runs at 51.46).
Known for his prolific run-scoring in Ranji cricket and his crucial role in the middle order for Sussex in English county cricket, Pujara has represented India in 103 matches, amassing 6,103 runs at an average of 43.61.
Although Pujara may not currently be in contention for Test matches, his peak performance showcased him as one of India’s most reliable scorers in overseas conditions. His solid technique, strong temperament, grit, and unwavering determination have been his key attributes against pace.
Pujara’s excellence extends to subcontinental conditions, where he has proven to be an exceptional player of spin bowling. Graeme Swann, the former England off-spinner, admitted in a Sky Sports Cricket podcast that he disliked bowling to Pujara, praising the batsman’s nimbleness on his feet.
Despite not being included in the squad for the first two Test matches against England, Pujara continues to pile on runs for Saurashtra in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, showcasing his consistent form over the years. However, after being dropped from the Indian side post the World Test Championship final against Australia, Pujara has been overlooked for overseas tours, with Shubman Gill taking his spot at number three in the batting order.
