In line with their respective rankings, defending champion Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek will lead the seedings at the upcoming Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year set to commence on Sunday at Melbourne Park.

The men’s seedings closely align with the ATP rankings as of Wednesday, featuring Novak Djokovic as the top seed, followed by Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, the sole player to defeat Djokovic in a Grand Slam event in 2023.

On the women’s side, the seedings are based on the WTA rankings from Nos. 1-8, with Barbora Krejcikova elevated to No. 9 due to the absence of her compatriot Karolina Muchova, the French Open finalist from the previous year, who is sidelined due to injury.

Notable absences include Petra Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion, who is skipping the tournament due to pregnancy, and Madison Keys, last year’s U.S. Open semifinalist, who is sidelined with a shoulder injury. This removes the 17th and 18th ranked players from contention in Australia.

The seeding structure ensures that players in the top 32 will not face each other in the early rounds, allowing for a fair distribution in the tournament brackets. Moreover, the top two seeded players are kept apart until the final match.
