On Friday, former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan remarked that India is among the most underachieving cricket teams globally.
During the Australia vs Pakistan Test, Vaughan posed a question to Mark Waugh, inquiring whether he believes that India qualifies as one of the most underachieving sports teams in the world. Waugh chose not to provide a direct response and instead turned the question back to Vaughan.
Vaughan expressed his perspective, stating, “They haven’t won much in recent times. I think they are (an underachieving side). They don’t win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skill-set (they should have achieved more). They’ve won in Australia twice (Test series in 2018/19 and 2020/21). Magnificent. But the last few World Cups, (they have) been nowhere, in the last few T20 World Cups, (they have) been nowhere.”
He emphasized that considering the talent at their disposal, India should have achieved more, acknowledging their prowess but expressing disappointment in their lack of consistent victories.
“They’re a good team. They have got plenty of talent but with all the talent they have and the resources they have, I just don’t think they win,” he remarked.
In the context of the recent Test match between India and South Africa, where Virat Kohli scored a fifty but India faced a defeat by an innings and 32 runs, Vaughan highlighted the team’s struggle. Despite dismissing South Africa for 408 in the first innings, India managed only 131 in 34.1 overs in their second innings. Vaughan underscored the disciplined attack by South Africa’s pace trio, including Nandre Burger (4/33), Kagiso Rabada (2/32), and Marco Jansen (3/36).
Earlier in the match, Marco Jansen remained unbeaten on 84, while Dean Elgar’s 185 made him the top-scorer for the hosts.
