In response to their disappointing loss to South Africa in the initial Test, India took swift action on December 29, 2023, by summoning right-arm fast bowler Avesh Khan to fortify their pace attack for the upcoming second and final Test in Cape Town.

India faced a setback in the first Test, succumbing to an innings defeat by 32 runs, concluding the match in just three days. Avesh Khan stepped in as a replacement for Mohammed Shami, who was sidelined for both Tests due to a lack of clearance from the BCCI medical team.

According to a board release, “The Men’s Selection Committee has named Mr. Avesh Khan as a replacement for Mr. Mohd. Shami for the second Test against South Africa to be played from 3rd-7th January 2024 in Cape Town.”

Avesh Khan, aged 27, boasts a record of 149 wickets in 38 first-class games at an average of 22.65. He contributed significantly to India’s triumph in the three-match ODI series against South Africa preceding the Tests, securing six wickets.

Currently engaged in representing India A in a four-day tour match against South Africa A at Benoni, Avesh showcased his prowess by claiming five wickets for 54 runs in 23.3 overs during the hosts’ first innings, limiting them to 263.

Expressing disappointment in the inadequate support provided to pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, India’s captain Rohit Sharma addressed the media after the significant defeat in South Africa. Despite going into the Test with four seam options and the inclusion of spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit emphasized the need for a collective effort from the bowling unit.

“This was not a 400-run wicket, and we gave too many runs. We sprayed the ball all around, but it happens. One can’t depend on one particular bowler (Bumrah). The other three pacers also needed to perform their roles. We could learn from how South Africa bowled,” Rohit stated. Reflecting on the challenging game, Rohit highlighted its value in teaching the bowling unit important lessons for future matches.
