On March 6, Captain Rohit Sharma expressed his admiration for Ravichandran Ashwin, asserting that no amount of praise is sufficient for the off-spinner. Rohit highlighted Ashwin’s significance as a “rare” talent crucial to the team’s success, especially ahead of his 100th Test match.
Although the outcome of the series has already been decided with India securing an unbeatable 3-1 lead against England, the upcoming fifth and final Test holds significance due to Ashwin’s milestone achievement alongside England batter Jonny Bairstow.
“On the eve of the match, Rohit emphasized the significance of playing 100 Tests, calling it a monumental achievement for any player. He underscored Ashwin’s pivotal role as a match-winner for the team, stating that no amount of praise can adequately recognize his contributions.”
“Over the last five to seven years, Ashwin has consistently contributed to our team’s performance in every series,” Rohit acknowledged. “Players like him are indeed rare to come by.”
“As we approach the toss, nearing his 100th Test landmark, I extend my congratulations to him. It’s always gratifying to see the fruits of your labor,” the skipper expressed.
They’ve been national teammates for nearly fifteen years, but their paths crossed over two decades ago when a young Mumbai off-spinner, Rohit, faced off against a talented opener, Ashwin, in the Vijay Merchant (U-16) and Cooch Behar Trophy (U-19) matches.
“As a captain, I’ve witnessed his journey since the U-19 and U-17 days. Initially a batsman, he later ventured into bowling. Conversely, I started as a bowler, then transitioned to batting. Our paths intertwined throughout, contributing to the betterment of Indian cricket,” remarked Rohit. Reflecting on Ashwin’s evolution over the past fourteen years, Rohit referred to him as the “cricket scientist,” highlighting his remarkable growth.
“Ashwin has undergone significant evolution as a cricketer, showcasing a wealth of intelligence. Having a player of his caliber in the team alleviates much of the strategic burden,” Rohit expressed. “When you entrust him with the ball, he takes charge of the game—dictating bowling strategies, field placements, and tactical decisions in the moment. His methodical approach to the game is truly commendable.”
“What you witness on the field is the culmination of extensive off-field preparation and the meticulous work put into honing one’s bowling skills,” Rohit elaborated. “I’ve witnessed Ashwin’s dedication firsthand, often observing him practicing with just one stump mere hours before a match—sometimes even the day before a Test match. This dedication to the fundamentals of cricket is truly admirable.”
“I’ve seen him consistently working on his craft, focusing on bowling at one stump, and this disciplined approach has been integral to his journey,” Rohit continued. “Moreover, his unwavering commitment to the team was evident in the Rajkot Test, where despite facing a challenging situation, he expressed his desire to contribute and make a difference for the team.”
“This is a rare quality, and having players like this makes you proud,” Rohit remarked.
Ashwin, who joined the elite ranks as the second Indian after Anil Kumble to surpass 500 Test wickets, embarked on his Test career in 2011. Over his remarkable 13-year journey, he has experienced more peaks than valleys.
