Instagram is currently testing a new feature dubbed “Flipside,” which enables users to create private posts exclusively visible to selected users or close friends. Initially introduced to a limited group, the Meta-owned photo and video-sharing platform plans to expand the availability of this feature to a wider user base.
Instagram’s Head, Adam Mosseri, is uncertain about the feature’s official launch, but the company is actively monitoring user feedback.
According to a report by The Standard, Flipside will empower users to establish a separate space for these private posts, offering users control over who can view their content. This feature is designed for individuals seeking to share more intimate or personal content solely with close friends and family.
On Instagram, it’s common for users, including celebrities, to maintain separate accounts, often referred to as “finsta” or fake Insta, exclusively shared with a select group. With Flipside, users can replicate this practice on their primary accounts, posting pictures and videos visible only to chosen individuals.
Moreover, Instagram is reportedly considering allowing users to customize their Flipside profile picture, name, and bio, mimicking the experience of a separate account. Currently available to select users, the Flipside feature is expected to be gradually rolled out to all users in the coming weeks.
A similar functionality has been available for Instagram stories, enabling users to upload stories visible solely to designated close friends, identified by a green circle. The upcoming Flipside feature is anticipated to provide a comparable level of privacy control.
