China is considering the ambitious goal of manufacturing 50% of the world’s clean-fuel ships by the year 2025.
China has established the objective of manufacturing over 50% of the world’s ships powered by cleaner fuels by 2025, as outlined in guidelines released by the Industry Ministry on December 28. However, no specific estimates regarding the number of ships involved were provided.
Low carbon fuels
The guidelines stipulate that China aims to construct more ships fueled by lower-carbon alternatives like methanol and liquefied natural gas (LNG), aligning with Beijing’s broader initiative to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s document emphasizes the need to innovate ship engines, enhance the efficiency of both traditional fuel and LNG marine engines, and progressively increase the widespread use of LNG in marine engines.
The document highlights significant advancements made by key enterprises in reducing pollution and carbon emissions, with a 13.5% decline in comprehensive energy consumption per 10,000 yuan from 2020 levels. It further outlines the ambitious goal of completing the environmental transformation of the shipping industry by 2030.
