Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, buoyed by the triumph of Ranbir Kapoor’s “Animal,” which amassed Rs 900 crore globally despite facing criticism for its perceived misogyny, has swiftly shifted focus to his next project, “Spirit,” featuring Telugu superstar Prabhas. During a recent interview, Sandeep’s bold assertion that “Spirit” would gross Rs 150 crore on its opening day emerged as the standout moment of the conversation.
Sandeep revealed that he’s currently immersed in crafting the script for “Spirit,” aiming to commence filming by November or December. Unlike his previous works, “Arjun Reddy” and “Animal,” where he had the freedom to write at his own pace, time constraints loom over this project. With 60% of the script already completed, Sandeep anticipates a quicker process, considering he has been nurturing the idea for over 2.5 years.
When questioned about the mounting anticipation for his next film, Sandeep expressed, “Honestly, I’m not dwelling on that. I didn’t dwell on it for ‘Animal’ either. My concern lies with my writing and the execution process. That’s where the real challenge lies. Succumbing to pressure may lead to repetition, which is not effective.”
Sandeep Reddy Vanga also revealed insights about “Spirit” while discussing the pressure to deliver. “Pressure is a fabricated concept. Yes, ‘Spirit’ is set to surpass both ‘Arjun Reddy’ and ‘Animal.’ The production budget will exceed Rs 300 crore. It’s essential to ensure the producer’s profitability. My priority is ensuring the producer’s financial success, enabling them to continue making films.”
When questioned about the feasibility of a Rs 300 crore budget in today’s Telugu film industry, Sandeep responded, “It depends on the star. I believe for Prabhas, it’s a justified budget.” He asserted that “Spirit” will recoup its investment, stating, “The producer’s investment is secure. With Prabhas and my collaboration, coupled with high expectations, digital and satellite rights, the producer will recuperate the funds. If our promotional efforts including teasers, trailers, songs, and posters resonate well with the audience, we anticipate an opening day collection of Rs 150 crore. That’s a trade estimate. Ideally, it should achieve Rs 150 crore.”
