Pep Guardiola paid tribute to Jurgen Klopp, labeling him the “best rival” he ever faced. Klopp’s announcement of his departure from Liverpool, the club he’s guided to numerous triumphs since 2015, prompted Guardiola’s reflections.
“I must admit, he’s truly remarkable both as a manager and as a person,” Pep remarked to journalists following his team’s narrow 1-0 FA Cup victory against Tottenham.
“As Liverpool’s manager, he’s been our primary adversary over the years, and his departure leaves a void not just at Anfield but also in our encounters with Manchester City. Klopp’s legacy will be deeply felt.”
“On a personal level, he’s been my most significant competitor since his days at Dortmund while I was at Bayern Munich. His absence will be felt, and personally, I’ll miss the challenge. There’s a sense of relief too, knowing I might sleep a bit easier the night before facing Liverpool! Nevertheless, I extend my best wishes to him.”
Guardiola expressed his belief that Klopp, who has amassed an impressive array of titles including the Champions League, Premier League, and more during his tenure at Liverpool, will be missed in the Premier League. He also anticipates Klopp’s return to coaching in the near future.
“Every manager reaches a point of fatigue after many years, and I can relate to that completely from my time at Barcelona,” Guardiola shared. “I believe the Premier League will feel the absence of his charisma, personality, and the dynamic style of play his teams exhibit.”
He continued, “Their approach, always aiming for victory, has been a joy to watch. I extend my best wishes to him.”
Guardiola affirmed his own energy and commitment to Manchester City, stating his readiness to fulfill his contract until 2025 and possibly extend it further. “Do you want to sack me?” he quipped with a smile. “I’m content with where I am. There’s still a year left, and I’m eager to continue – perhaps even longer.”
