Akula Sreeja, India’s leading women’s singles paddler, is now shifting her focus towards securing qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics following a disappointing loss in the singles semifinals of the recent Nationals in Panchkula.
As she embarks on preparations for the upcoming year, the 25-year-old athlete expressed satisfaction with her No.1 finish in the domestic circuit for the fourth consecutive year. Sreeja emphasized the rigorous selection process, comprising 50% domestic ranking, 40% international ranking, and 10% selection committee decisions.
In outlining the path to Olympic qualification, Sreeja highlighted the significance of upcoming international tournaments, with the World Championships in Korea serving as a major event and the Olympic team qualification tournament.
The two-time National champion revealed her commitment to enhancing her skills, particularly focusing on improving her backhand variations, along with boosting her world ranking crucial for Olympic qualification. Sreeja mentioned plans for the Indian team to train in Korea for a week before the World Championships.
Expressing contentment with her progress over the last three years, Sreeja credited her coach Somnath Ghosh for tirelessly working on her skills. She also acknowledged her improved fitness, thanks to her trainer Hirak Bagchi, and promised to dedicate all her efforts to the cause. Sreeja expressed gratitude for the support from the Dream Foundation, finding it truly encouraging as she gears up for the demanding season leading to the Olympics.
