On Friday, India reported 640 new cases of Covid-19, leading to an increase in active cases from 2,669 to 2,997, as per data from the Union health ministry. The country’s total Covid-19 tally now stands at 4.50 crore (4,50,07,212). The death toll rose to 5,33,328, with one additional fatality reported in Kerala, according to the 8 am update.
Recoveries from the disease have reached 4,44,70,887, contributing to a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as indicated by the health ministry’s website. The case fatality rate is reported at 1.19%.
As per the ministry’s data, a total of 220.67 crore doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in the country.
Kerala records 265 new Covid-19 cases, one death
In the past 24 hours, Kerala documented 265 new Covid-19 cases and one fatality attributed to the disease. Out of the 328 reported Covid infections across the country until 8 am today, 265 originated from Kerala, resulting in a total of 2,606 active cases in the state.
The reported death in the state brings the cumulative number of Covid-related fatalities in Kerala since the onset of the pandemic three years ago to 72,060.
Noida reports first Covid case in months
A resident of Noida in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar has been diagnosed with Covid, marking the first instance of infection in the region in several months, according to officials who informed the news agency PTI.
West Bengal records 8 Covid-19 cases
West Bengal has recorded eight new cases of Covid, and health authorities are conducting tests to determine the presence of the JN.1 strain among the affected individuals. Among the reported cases, a six-month-old child has been admitted to Calcutta Medical College Hospital, while a 58-year-old patient from Behala is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Alipore.
At Bellevue Clinic in Minto Park, two patients were admitted—one on December 3, still undergoing treatment, and another from Bhowanipore who tested positive on December 20. Hospital sources indicate that one of these patients is also grappling with malaria.
