Microblogging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has successfully restored services following a significant technical issue around 11 am today. Users worldwide encountered a disruption as both the website and mobile application displayed a ‘Welcome to your timeline’ message instead of the usual tweets.
The outage was widespread, with over 70,000 reports on Downdetector indicating users were unable to access the platform. The cause of the issue remains unknown, but some users noted being able to view ads and their own tweets on their profiles.
In response to the outage, concerned users turned to Facebook to share their experiences. Some expressed frustration and sought confirmation from others about the app’s functionality. Interestingly, the feature called Spaces, allowing users to live stream discussions, remained unaffected by the downtime and saw a surge in users.
Rumors circulated on Spaces suggesting that Elon Musk had fallen behind on payments for critical infrastructure, but these remain unverified. Despite the outage, the hashtag ‘TwitterDown’ trended on social media.
This incident marks the latest in a series of outages for X this year, with previous disruptions occurring in March and July. In July, Downdetector reported over 13,000 instances of downtime in the US and the UK, with users encountering a message stating, “Sorry, you are rate limited. Please wait a few moments then try again.” Similarly, on March 6, the platform experienced a brief outage, affecting thousands of users who reported issues with normal usage and accessing links, images, and videos.
